Community Punishments

Telegraph: Unemployed people could be forced to carry out "community punishments" such as litter-picking or gardening if they miss meetings designed to help them back into the workplace.

There is a real danger here. I'm all for destroying the dependency culture, but there's a line between getting people to work and making the unemployed appear in the public psyche like the ASBO louts who are also supposed to be litter-picking as part of their "community punishments".

Just take away their money after a certain time. No bargaining, no "you do this, we'll give you this" ... just take the money away. Lord knows if money makes the world go round, but it's damn well good at motivating people.

Spot on, Sam. Welfare reform in America has pushed people into work (or self-employment), rather than living on benefits.

Problem is, I'm not sure if any politicans have the guts to tackle it here as they are running scared of the 'JobCentre vote'.
